Resilience, Advocacy, and Empowerment: The Journey of a Camp Lejeune Widow

As the widow of Marine Corporal Edward Swindler, my story is one of resilience amidst loss. In 1991, my cherished husband succumbed to an aggressive carcinoma—a result of circumstances that would only come to light 22 years after his passing, unveiling the toxic water exposure he endured at Camp Lejeune Marine Base. In his memory, I’ve become an unwavering advocate for justice and a pillar of support for fellow Lejeune widows, forging a sisterhood as we navigate this shared journey.

August 2023 marked my induction into Lejeune Empowered Advocacy Widows, INC—an organization that resonates deeply with my personal journey. With 36 years of public service etched into my career, I bring a wealth of experience from my time as a committed State employee. Known for my service-oriented approach, I’ve dedicated myself to social work and administration, driven by a passion to serve the public. Proficiency in conducting interviews, navigating government regulations, and leading professional staff have translated into successful client outcomes. My aspiration is to leverage these skills to propel the mission of LEAWs, INC forward.

Back in 1982, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida. Detroit, Michigan, was my birthplace and upbringing, but Jacksonville is where I’ve chosen to make my lifelong home. As a proud parent to two adult sons, I’ve been fortunate enough to witness their growth in this nurturing community. The recognition of three esteemed Davis Productivity awards stands as a testament to my sustained dedication to the State of Florida, a dedication driven by my fervent desire to assist those in need.

Maya Angelou’s words, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” resonate deeply with my journey. Through the amalgamation of my professional achievements and innate compassion, I aspire to embody this philosophy, illuminating a path of empowerment, justice, and support for the Lejeune widows we stand alongside.
